suddenly, OCs
Jan. 29th, 2018 02:04 amdisorganized infodump. i've never been too interested in my own characters before so this. sure is a thing
so the story goes about 3-4 centuries ago in [a kingdom of some kind i think] therichest brightest magic-users discovered a fascinating people in nature, faeries! they fell in love with each other and ended up intermingling and now most magic-users in the center of the kingdom are fae, or mostly fae, which you can tell by how successful they and their families are and their various nature-looking features, ain't it grand
so the story goes about 3-4 centuries ago in [a kingdom of some kind i think] the
also it's total bullshit!
there are no fae and never were. there were nature spirits, but they were more like...y'know, nature, kind of condensed into forms that looked animal-like. (ex. a giant rabbit that sprang bluebells above wherever it slept underground.) the wizards or whatever captured the ones in [kingdom] and used them to strengthen their own magic abilities
at some point or other they helped someone from another shitty old-fashioned kingdom and he just fuckin. decided to award them by marrying off his daughter to 'em without asking either. this is a bad thing on many levels and zeal wants to get tf out of there as quickly as possible, they're a friendly and helpful person but since they travel so much they never make bonds and never stay anywhere for more than a few days unless injured. it's also kind of a way for the guy to toss off his youngest daughter with less trouble than marrying her off to someone else who knows they would get a shitty dowry. it's not cool
holly (she/her): idk much about her yet. 18. pale, blonde, brown eyes. she doesn't want to get married but also doesn't think there's anything she can do to resist. may actually end up fleeing with zeal but there's never any actual romantic feelings involved, though they'll probs become friends.
holly's sibs: betony (he/him) age 7; cherry (she/her, eventually he/him perhaps) age 21; lily (she/her) age 22 but is small and often assumed to be around 15.
"dr. aconite" (he/him): see textdump at the start of the entry. at least 300. pale skin, white hair but probs used to be a redhead. deep orange eyes, formerly blue. has two sets of fangs where fangs should not be--a crooked wolf set across his chest, sticking out over his heart, and a vertical set more mouthlike on his left side. back has 8 circles, 4 on either side of the spine, where alpine ibex horns once grew. there are a handful of scars there from the hornpoints' sudden growth and curving backwards. has random patches of copperhead scales all over his body, including up his neck. is extra irritable when those need to molt. not actually a doctor, it's a stage name.
his travelling circus used to work on foot/cart/exotic animal, but as the rest of the world advanced, the circus now mainly travels by use of an incredibly long train. he's one of the most powerful fae out there, so the train sometimes just kind of shows the fuck up on others' tracks or lays his own through impossible locations, like cutting through swamps or over lakes. secretly kind of afraid of his own magic but combats it through its use, which usually works but sometimes leaves him a paranoid wreck. secretly also absolutely fucking terrified of other fae and while he'll steal away most others who go after him, another faerie will definitely face an attempt on their life.
older bro, juniper? (he/them) slightly older than "dr. aconite". bald, formerly redhead; blue eyes. animal relation is the walrus, has the bulkiness and tusks and greytoned skin.
his entire life centers around guilt. guilt about driving his brother away, guilt about the state of [the kingdom]'s people without nature spirits and any suffering he sees following his brother's circus from a distance, guilt about leaving his family behind in the inner circle (he probs married and has a few decedents he helped raise before he set out), guilt about not giving up and going back or sending them messages, guilt about being too much of a coward to do anything but follow the train and sometimes use his magic to help anyone who dares to approach him. kinda useless. will probs eventually develop out of it.
random facts about this universe: tech levels are around castle in the sky's or howl's moving castle (studio ghibli). electricity's a thing but not everywhere, magic is seen often and accepted, flying machines everywhere but that's a recent development. outright going to war isn't overly common but spying on other kingdoms/countries is. fae kingdom is p isolated in general and fairly behind in tech and societal things. the circus does leave the fae kingdom p often and is famous for its attractions and horrors, but it always returns.
they probably didn't mean to massively fuck up but lol they did. even if they didn't actually manage to kill the nature spirits and let them go again they were mostly so weak they still ended up dying after their release.
humans, even magical humans--sry, fae aren't nearly as skilled enough to really keep nature in balance. they fortunately didn't manage to capture any massive weather/seasonal spirits but the kingdom's gone downhill p far, but only outside of the castle/inner circle city or w/e. shit like plant life is flourishing there but mostly only there, especially as over time the fae isolate themselves more and more, so the rest of the people have shitty crop yields and general health problems among themselves and their animal population.
they're also p long-lived, so some of the first fae still exist and make sure those rumors are still going strong, both inside and out. so u have the "lesser" population mostly buying it b/c they don't have any proof or memories otherwise aside from old stories b/c generally they're kind of too busy trying to at least Not Be Miserable or not Totally Not Die to focus on them, and then kids inside who believe their older family b/c why wouldn't they believe family?
(noble and chastity absolutely belong to the latter group.)

dr. aconite is one of those first fae, one of the strongest, and he has a travelling circus. they say he has one of the last remaining spirits in the kingdom somehow trapped within it, and the rest of the fae really want it. some b/c more power, some (v few) b/c they think they might be able to actually help the rest of the kingdom studying it, some just b/c they think it should belong to real proper faeries and not that freak.
...p sure that's bullshit. i think the spirit might be like, a cat he cursed into looking/acting like the old spirits did.
(he also might be secretly terrified of it despite it not being that powerful but idk exactly why yet or if i'll stick with it. this is mostly just spaghetti at the wall)
he's also technically not one of the first who worked out how to ~become faerie~
he just agreed to helping out someone like his parents and/or teachers b/c of course he wanted more powerful magic absolutely
and that kinda backfired on him b/c they didn't actually know what they were doing for a while.
all fae have animal features, it's kind of inevitable. sometimes it's just the cutesy ear/tail combo, sometimes it's claws
sometimes it's something like full-on animal heads which is kind of frustrating b/c it means they don't have the ability to speak the language. there might be something like sign but mostly the parents just have them taught what they can of spoken and then have them learn to use their magic to project a voice.
but even then things are...mostly where they should be. teeth are in the jaw. tails are extensions of the spine. wings substitute arms or come from shoulderblades. ears on either side of the head
this was not the case of some of the earlier ones, including dr. aconite.
idk exactly what's up with him, but my current mental image is like. teeth in his chest. it looks like a mouth but even if you somehow manage to pry them apart it's just a v thin layer of skin behind it
has a bunch of funky circles on either side of his spine that were some kind of horns once that were painfully cut down so he could still wear clothes
so that gave him a bit of trauma! and horror fascination.
(i think he was mid-range teens at the time.)
his "good" brother (in his 20s maybe) was a fucking dick about it. why didn't you wait until you knew what was going to happen?!
Rynet - Yesterday at 2:43 PM
I presume this backfired on him.
thethrillof - Yesterday at 2:43 PM
absolutely :V
there was probs a fight that big bro lost b/c he had much less magic, but the main consequence was that the younger brother took off from the inner circle and went to do his own thing (which for a long time was hide)
even after big bro became fae he thought little bro deserved it for being a moron for a long time tbh
and probably straight-up thought he died b/c there were a lot of complications with little bro's transformation in the first place outside of just the visible body horror
(tbh that's a big reason why dr. aconite hid, he thought he was going to die too for a while and didn't want anyone to have the satisfaction of finding his corpse)
but once the circus became A Thing like half a century later, older bro was like hnnn maybe i should go find the idiot, if that actually is him, it's probably not him
SURPRISE IT'S HIM AND HE HATES YOUR GUTS AS WELL AS THE REST OF THE NON-FREAKSHOW FAE
everyone v quickly learns if you go try to cause harm there you either die or become a part of the circus. no ifs ands or buts about it.
older bro very narrowly misses being killed and by the time noble and chastity are born he's basically been spending the past century trailing the circus from afar, all :c
he figured out that he fucked up and the fae were dicks. too little too late
a big thing that leaves ppl afraid of the circus is that you don't need a contract of any type for dr. aconite to do things to you if you piss him off.
...tbh, you actually don't for other fae. they can do what they want too. but they're ~civilized~ and don't want anyone to know they can do things like that or lie so that's more bullshit mostly.
again, not a thing the youngins know. they're raised like they can't so the first time the kids lie and get away from it they're super bewildered and think maybe they're broken.
It's A Mess.
if zeal and dr. aconite are in the same 'verse, they may have clashed once or twice. they've got some strong magic even though they're not fae, which is interesting to him; he causes trouble sometimes for the hell of it even though ppl come to his shows anyway, and as they're sort of a wandering hero, they feel obligated to deal with it.
noble (he/him) & chastity(she/her): twins! probably like 10? family called Riodinidae but their animal bits are Sitka deer horns and ears. black hair, pale skin, noble w/ red eyes, chas w/ gold. noble doesn't have incisors. chastity isn't supposed to have horns but too bad.
extremely sheltered and pressured to be good examples of their family. but noble is bad at staying still and paying attention (both as a Kid and possibly having ADHD) and chas is fascinated with ~unladylike~ creepy shit and has a skill for necromancy. they probably sometimes think about leaving the inner city place but need an outside influence to get them to actually do so.
zeal (they/them): wandering "knight"/hero, self-appointed, probably mid-20s. their Aesthetic is black and red--skin and hair are black, eyes and clothes are red. though the color scheme doesn't indicate it, they've got wind powers and can fly on their own, though it's quite a bit easier for them to use a flying machine. entirely unrelated to fae but since they're always moving have probably found themselves over the kingdom a few times. came from a family that bred hunting dogs.
